OUR INDIAN OVERNIGHT TRAIN EXPERIENCE.
We boarded the train at about 9pm in absolute chaos and arrived at our destination at around 10am still in bustling chaos, so had a fair time on this mode of transport and saw the most amazing things both on the train and out of the window once the sun rose in the morning. We were shown to our seats which converted into a bunk bed. We were given a sheet, a blanket and a strange small pillow. The seats have a curtain to pull across which gives some privacy during the night. We had taken a bike chain combination lock which we chained our bags to the seats beneath where we slept. (this is advised as bags do just disappear in the night or whilst you're not watching them...I did encounter a woman dragging at my bag in the early hours of the morning). In India, Westerners are somewhat of a novelty and it seemed we were the sole Westerners in that particular carriage. I had many Indian people open my curtain during the night just to look at me...I think word got out we were there. Many engaged in conversation during daylight hours which was great as we got to get a bit of local insite other than that of our guide while others just stared at us in awe. We had been warned not to eat the food on the train. My cousin Alicia had done the same trip a couple of months prior and was strong testament of this rumor. As good as it smells, and as hungry as you may be.....do not be tempted. The train will stop at various stations where food vendors will offer you the most yummy looking interesting foods through the window for a very small amount of money. The train stewards will bring chai tea....resist if you can. Instead, pack enough bottled water, and packaged snacks to see you through until you reach your destination. The train trip was an unforgetable part of our trip to India and would recommend everyone does at least one train trip somewhere whilst in India.
